Each individual page has a different PageRank, so chances are that www.mysite.net/ will return a different answer than www.mysite.net/index.html: the PageRank for www.mysite.net/ is the value assigned to the website as a whole, and the PageRank for www.mysite.net/index.html corresponds to the index page itself.

As you probably know by now, PageRank is used by Google to help determine a page's relevance or importance. It's calculated automatically based on a number of factors, including the quality of the links pointing towards you.
