I upgraded to Mandriva 2007 from Mandriva 2006 recently, and the Device icon on my desktop doesn't work! How do I fix it?
Yep, with the new release, the link used by this icon is broken and you get an error like
Protocol not supported: device
Quite a problem indeed... This device icon is used to access the various disks you plug into your system, including USB keys, USB disks, DVD's, CD's, and floppy disks!
Actually, the fix is easy:
- Right-click on your
Deviceicon, - Select
Properties, - In the
Propertieswindow, select theApplicationtab, - Replace
konqueror --profile devices device:/bykonqueror media:/, - Click
Ok, - You're all set!
Next time you need to access your USB key or the last DVD you insterted, simply click on this device icon!

Well, those are always hard to fix. However, I noticed a few things:
1- on computers with a fresh 2006 install, the upgrade went fine.
2- on computers with a 2006 that had been upgraded from a 10.1, the upgrade to 2007 wasn't great. The system had a lot of problems and I ended up reinstalling the whole thing. Since my /home is on another partition, I can do it fairly easily (BACK UP FIRST!). Since then, no problem...
Otherwise, you could post a question the Mandriva Club: http://forum.club.mandriva.com/

Thanks for your helpful suggestions.
I have just done a clean install from a Mandriva One 2007 Live CD and all my USB hardware is now back in action.
Mandriva One even identified the make and model of my printer immediately and configured it without any hassle.
Problem solved.

Unfortunately, after my previous comments, I soon found that my version of Mandriva One 2007 would not install the CUPS server, meaning that it could print a test page and nothing else.
I was also unable to use my favourite browser, Opera, due to the missing library libstdc++.so.5, or get any updates.
However, undeterred, I went back and did a fresh install of Mandriva Linux Free 2007 and I am very pleased to report that everything is now working better than ever.
The lesson, folks, appears to be: do not mess about with upgrades, go for a clean installation each time, if you want to avoid major problems.

Goto http://easyurpmi.zarb.org and setup the software repositories for the installer. By default the installer is setup to only see what's on the CD(s) which for One or Free isn't very much software.

I installed 2007 formating only my usr and root partitions. I tried the above solution but it didn't put my network in the "Devices" Desktop Config File. I re-installed 2006 and now my usb devices aren't coming up, but that is another problem.

I recently upgraded from Mandriva 2006 to Mandriva Linux Free 2007.
I have fixed the Device icon on my desktop, but when I attempt to look at and configure the hardware, the Control Center will still not detect any USB device connected to my laptop: keyboard, mouse, printer, floppy disk drive, whatever.
Checking the list of USB controllers and clicking on: Set driver options, produces the error: This driver has no configuration parameter!
However, when I boot from the installation disc, it has no trouble recognising my USB keyboard and mouse during the upgrade process.
What do I need to do to get everything working again?
By the way, I am fairly new to Linux, so please bear this in mind when posting a reply.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
